Gemmotherapy was developed in the 1950s by Pol Henry, a Belgian agronomist who observed that a plant's embryonic tissue, its bud, its young shoot, carries a phytochemical profile the mature leaf or root no longer holds:
In the 1960s, Max Tétau refined the method into the clinical discipline practised across France, Belgium and the rest of Europe today.
The name itself carries the idea: gemma, Latin for both "bud" and "precious stone"; the point where a plant commits its full biological intelligence to the life it is about to become, the same embryonic charge a seed holds just before it germinates.

Herbalism extracts the mature plant, leaves, roots, flowers for their alkaloids, flavonoids and terpenes.
Gemmotherapy extracts the embryonic tissue instead: thinner, more permeable cell walls make its growth factors and phytohormones far more bioavailable, and its action reaches the biological terrain rather than only the symptom.
Most producers use around 5kg of fresh buds per 100kg of macerate.
Herbolistique uses 10 to 17kg (up to 3x the industry concentration) macerated for 21 days in a triple-solvent medium with Plocher-revitalised water, with no freezing at any stage of production.
